Somatic Experiencing is a body-awareness approach to trauma. It is the result of over forty years of observation, research, and hands-on development by Dr. Peter Levine.
Somatic experiencing understands trauma related symptoms as an effect of a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and believes that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma. If you have experienced trauma, your capacity for self-regulation might be compromised. Self-Regulation is the ability to track oneself and be able to return to center – to a regulated state. With Somatic Experiencing treatment the inherent capacity to self-regulate can be restored, and the trauma related symptoms resolved and prevented. When your nervous system is in balance, you feel relaxed and at ease, your body appropriately responds to external circumstances and your responses are fluid and resilient, you are available for connection, and feel emotionally stable, you experience that you have choices and options, and you have an increased capacity for healthy relationships.
Working together I will help you recognize and expand the internal, external, and possibly missing resources for healing of the traumatic event. Somatic Experiencing is, in addition to talking, focusing on noticing and tracking sensations in the body. I will facilitate the re-regulation of your autonomic nervous system by helping you restore the natural cycles of activation and deactivation.
